Three young entrepreneurs from Vigan joined forces to launch COEO, a company that designs outdoor furniture inspired by the French art of living.

They have known each other for fifteen years, all three are from Vigan. Two of them, Amandine Berthezene and Yannick Bonfort, have travelled extensively during and since their studies.

These experiences, particularly a prolonged stay in China, made them realise how much the French art of living is appreciated and sought after. They also share a certain taste for furniture and barbecue evenings, conducive to conviviality.

The Covid-19 pandemic forced Amandine and Yannick to return hastily from China. They found themselves in Vigan where their families still reside and where Jean-Rémy Bresson, a mutual friend, has his carpentry workshop.

From there was born the small business in which all three are partners: Coeo, which in Latin means "to gather". "The idea was born in spring 2020, says Amandine. And we launched our first sales this year."

At the moment, Coeo offers only one product primarily: a barbecue brazier, a respectable-sized plancha made of corten steel that works with wood fire, the Coeo trio. The design is simple but well thought out. Its young creators have also registered the model with the National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI).

"It is designed to create upward air flows to optimise the draw. Similarly, the stamping is done in such a way that the fats flow inside and no one gets burned," specifies Yannick. The technique is his field, being an engineer who has worked notably at Alsthom in research and development.

Design and friendliness

The DNA of the young company is outdoor furniture and its motto is design and friendliness. The goal is to create simple yet practical designs, using beautiful materials. Thus, corten steel, a particular alloy, offers a guarantee of durability: rust quickly transforms into a lasting patina.

From its launch, Coeo created its website and the concept seems to have immediately appealed: "We have reached twenty-five sales in a month and a half, double our forecasts. And we initially thought to distribute locally. However, the first sales were made in Lyon, Toulouse, Brest..."

Solicited by Spain and Belgium

They are being sought for Spain and Belgium. With the beautiful season approaching, the prospects look promising. "Restaurateurs are considering opening outdoors. In this perspective, our product interests them greatly: it allows cooking for fifty people."

They are also being sought by distributors, in Aigues-Mortes, in Jacou (near Montpellier). They are in discussions with a Montpellier brand. "But we are young and we do not want to rush and be absorbed."

Subsequently, they plan to develop other fire pits and outdoor furniture, always keeping in mind design, gastronomy, and conviviality.

In addition to their savings, the three young partners have benefited from the support of Initiative Gard, from a grant from the community of communes of Pays viganais. The CCI of Vigan, particularly Sylvie Polop, has helped them a lot in setting up their project and their financing plan, which allowed them to take out a loan.
