Guide to choose a brasero barbecue?

The fire pit has become an essential feature of outdoor spaces. Both a decorative object, a versatile cooking appliance, and a true source of conviviality, it transforms every meal into a unique experience.

But how do you choose the best plancha fire pit suited to your needs? Design, dimensions, materials, uses, accessories… This comprehensive guide helps you make the best choice.

Pourquoi installer un brasero dans votre jardin ?

The plancha plate: why carbon steel is the only serious choice?

The griddle is the element you will use the most. Its material is therefore crucial.

✔ Carbon steel: the professional choice

Carbon steel is the material used by professional kitchens for several reasons:

  • excellent thermal inertia;
  • uniform heating ;
  • ideal surface for searing food;
  • creation of a natural non-stick seasoning;
  • resistance to high temperatures.

❌ Why the stainless steel plancha is a bad choice

The stainless steel :

  • heats irregularly;
  • deforms more easily;
  • makes the food stick;
  • loses heat as soon as cold ingredients are added.

👉 A serious plancha brazier must therefore use a raw carbon steel plancha of 10 mm.

It is the COEO standard.

2. The material of the fire pit: Corten or black paint?

✔ Corten Steel: the high-end reference

  • Does not rust in a perforating manner
  • Develops a protective layer
  • Modern and sustainable style
  • Heat resistant

A Corten fire pit is made to last for years.

✔ Black brazier: imperative attention to a technical point

A black fire pit (therefore painted) is not on its own protected against rust.

The paint always ends up deteriorating under the effect of fire.

That is why a good black fire pit must be made of:

➡️ Galvanised steel under the paint.

The galvanised coating protects the steel core and prevents corrosion.

👉 At COEO, the black fire pits are always galvanised, which ensures a lifespan significantly longer than unprotected models.

3. Airflow: a high-performance fire pit must breathe

The airflow is often overlooked, but it is the foundation of efficient combustion.

A good fire pit should include:

  • ventilation openings to feed the fire;
  • a geometry allowing for vertical air circulation;
  • an optimal evacuation of the ashes.

Without airflow:

  • the fire is dying down,
  • the heat becomes insufficient,
  • The griddle takes time to heat up.

👉 The COEO fire pits are designed with a controlled airflow for a lively combustion and a griddle that quickly reaches its ideal temperature.

4. The design of the plancha: borderless, sloped and accessible

The shape of the plancha directly influences the cooking comfort.

✔ A flat grill without a rim

The edges prevent:

  • to easily slide the food;
  • to manipulate continuously;
  • to work with a spatula like a chef.

A good plancha should be flat, without a rim.

✔ A slightly inclined griddle

This allows:

  • to avoid grease overflow;
  • to direct the juices towards the centre (the tank);
  • to keep the cooking area clean.

✔ A griddle not pressed down in the basin

A sunken griddle creates areas for food retention and hinders handling.

It also makes the interview complicated.

👉 The COEO fire pits meet these criteria: accessible plancha, flat, without edges, and perfectly inclined to simplify cooking.

5. Size of the fire pit: what diameter to choose?

  • 82 cm → versatile, ideal for 6 to 12 people
  • 100 cm → large tables and culinary show
  • Less than 82 cm → occasional use, limited area and difficulties in finding suitable wood

The best compromise: 82 or 100 cm.

Why is a COEO fire pit a better choice?

✓ Premium materials: Corten steel or galvanised steel for the black models

✓ Professional thickness carbon steel griddle

✓ Optimised air flow

✓ Stability, robustness, longevity

✓ French design recognised in the World of design

✓ Modular accessories (grid, board, lid…)

COEO designs its fire pits as genuine outdoor cooking tools, not just as simple decorative objects.

Key questions.

Find out more here in a few questions.

Corten steel, also known as weathering steel, is a type of alloy steel that develops a protective layer of rust on its surface when exposed to the elements. This rust, unlike that of traditional steels, forms a stable and dense layer that protects the steel from deeper corrosion, while also giving it a unique aesthetic appearance, often appreciated for its "aged" or "industrial" look.

Corten steel combines both strength and a distinctive visual appearance, with hues ranging from reddish-brown to orange. It is particularly popular in regions exposed to harsh weather and varied climatic conditions.

The choice of the size of the plancha for the brasero depends on the use you wish to make of it and the available space. Here are some criteria to help you choose:

1. Brasero diameter 98 cm (larger):

• Larger surface: a 98 cm fire pit will provide a larger heating area, ideal for group gatherings or for warming a larger outdoor space.

• More capacity: It will be able to hold more wood or coal, thus allowing for a longer burning time.

• Required space: It requires a larger outdoor space to be used comfortably.

2. Brasero diameter 82 cm (smaller):

• More compact: an 82 cm fire pit is more suitable for a small garden, terrace, or balcony. It is easier to move and will take up less space.

• More moderate heating: it will be sufficient for small gatherings or more intimate moments around the fire.

• Less consumption: It will burn less fuel, which can be an advantage if you want more occasional use.

In summary:

• If you have a large outdoor space and want more intense heating for a group, choose the 98 cm model.

• If your space is smaller or if you prefer something more manageable and suitable for small gatherings, the 82 cm fire pit would be more appropriate.

A brasero plate / plancha should not be less than 10mm thick. Below this thickness, your brasero may warp over time.

Our fire pits are designed with double wall thickness and a wide, easily accessible wood storage space. Logs can be stored easily and accessed at any time to light the fire or revive it during cooking.
